I was looking to landscape my front yard. I am putting stone on top, do you think newspaper will do the job and if so how long will it last as a weed barrier? Thanks!
I put down a layer 10 to 12 pages thick, and it lasts for 2 to 3 years, even in Florida. The papers need to be thoroughly soaked when you put them down or the slightest breeze will blow them all over the neighborhood. Have your mulch ready to spread over the newspapers before you start papering, because if it's sunny or windy, the top layer will dry out and blow away. .
I prefer paper to plastic. It's too easy to punch holes in plastic when walking on it. Plastic eventually needs to be picked up and thrown away, which is a chore. Papers just disintegrate and become part of your soil.

by the old plants, I found mushroom growing underneath by the drip irrigation. Can this harm my landscaping or are they pretty much benign?
This is a common occurance. You should take care in the removal of the mushrooms by washing your hands thoroughly after their removal, and I wouldn't consider any mushroom as benign. Some mushrooms are deathly toxic so wear the appropriate safety gear,(gloves)

I want to put grass in large area in front yard as the landscaping barrier didn't keep out weeds. The ground underneath, is straight, but do I need to let the dirt "breathe" after being covered for so long?
Do I sprinkle more dirt on top? I don't want to disturb the ground too much since it is level now.
We are expecting rain tonight and I am hoping that will soften the dirt some.
Thanks.
It's not so much a matter of letting the ground "breathe." You need to turn the soil over and do a pH test of the soil (pH test kits are sold in Lowe's, Home Depot, or any garden center) to ensure that the soil will be suitable for growing grass. If it's too low or high, they will give you guidance on how you can make it more alkaline or acidic. For example, they may say that you need to add lime. You'll also need to ensure that the soil has proper drainage so that the grass can grow. Get ready to turn over the soil and possibly add some fertilizer, peat moss, lime or other product. Also, be cautious about when you plant seed. Planting of grass seed should be done in the early part of spring (after danger of frost) or in fall. If it's done in summer, the seed will initially take and then the grass seedlings will burn out and you'll lose your investment in seed. Also, the seedlings will need lots of water each day for at least two weeks after they start to come up.

There is a weed barrier and rocks on top. The weeds either grow from underneath the weed barrier or over it. They can't be dug up because of the weed barrier and they can't be pulled. I've tried and I've hired help, who has also failed. Any ideas to kill this stuff off? I've tried spray, these weeds laugh in the face of these sprays!
if there is dirt over the weed barrier then you may be able to use a weed burner, they are just a nozzle you hook up to a propane bottle turn it on and light it up it throws quite a flame so you must be careful not to burn plants you want to keep. Sprays will kill weeds and your flowers too.
Hi, I have all of the landscape weed barrier down and now I am deciding on mulch. I am fearful of the artillery fungus as it happened to my brother-in-law and to a friend and there house has spots all over it. Do you think I could use 2 to 3 inches of leaf compost on top of the weed barrier instead of the hardwood mulch?? I bought a bag of rubber mulch, but to do the area we want would cost to much right now. Thanks!
Also I read if you mulch up the leaves and apply them to your garden (I live in NY) before winter, after the snow has cleared, your garden will look nice in the spring.
Your additional details statement reminds me that my neighbor does this very thing every autumn and winter. He waits for the leaves to fall then takes his rototiller and grinds them straight into the soil. I am not kidding when I say his soil is the absolute richest and has the best texture of any I have ever seen.

Controlling bamboo in landscape plantings (Chatham Journal)
Bamboo is one of the most difficult to control "escaped ornamentals." Once established, bamboo can take over landscapes, stream banks, and woodlands. I have seen bamboo shoots actually breaking though concrete driveways. Unfortunately, postemergence herbicides such as Roundup seem to only burn back the foliage, providing no real control.
There are many species of bamboo sold in the nursery trade, some more invasive than others. Creeping types are, as a rule, very invasive once established. There are clump-type bamboos that spread at a much slower rate. Clump-type bamboos can be removed by digging up the offending plants. Unfortunately, many of the more popular types of bamboo sold in the nursery industry are the more invasive, spreading types. The plants spread by thick, tough, underground stems (rhizomes). These rhizomes are resilient to adverse environmental conditions and most herbicides. To control such aggressive weeds you must eradicate or contain the entire infestation. Treating only a part of the infestation will be doomed to failure because bamboo can re-establish rapidly. Also, bamboo control programs will require an intensive control strategy over several years.
