I need Florida landscaping ideas or layouts?

I just bought a home in southwest florida and it has a 8X16 area on the right of the walkway. I would also like something to the left in front of the house as well. Also, we would like to put some sort of small shrub along the backside of the house where the screen enclosure is. Please Help! I have no idea what and where to put landscaping.

Why not plant a golden maple, Acer japonica aureum or the trusty Cedar atlantica combinined with low clipped box in a chequerboard effect for the focal of the frontage. As to the 8x16 area, a combination of a gravelled area with a small fountain centrepiece edged with low growing juniper bamboo and azaleas. Avoid rhodos as they tend to get very big. This small shrub, well try cotoneaster horiontalis.

Landscape ideas for a Florida backyard...?

Outside of grass, our backyard is completely empty! We built our home, and I would like to have a nice yard area to go with it. Unfortunately we don't have a patio, so something that I could incorporate some seating areas into would be nice. Any suggestions as to some plants that are "Florida friendly" and fairly low maintenance?

(Also, the land dips down 1-2 feet at the back of the yard - so anything that would help cover that up and make it look normal would be great!)

It's really hard to imagine the yard, to really come up with ideas, without seeing it. But... Some ideas, that may or may not work for you..

*Roses - What is a garden without atleast one Rose bush, right? =)

*Tree(s) - Since you are starting with a blank canvas, in a sense, why not consider starting with a tree, or two. Decide what would work best you you. Perhaps a shade tree, which one mature, can provide a nice shady spot for a yard swing or a bench? Flowering tree(s)? A fruit tree or two?

*Raised garden - Maybe you could build a raised garden at th back of the yard, where it slopes a bit... To bring it back up, make it appear more level?

*Pond or other water feature?

*Build a small patio from flagstone, or brick - surround it with some shrubs or flowers, maybe?

Good luck to you, I know you will turn your backyard into a peaceful retreat, with a little time and imagination! =)

Can you help with landscaping suggestions for my northern facing front yard in Volusia County, Florida?

To the right of the walkway there's a soil bed we'd like to fill since we tore out these horrible bare halff-dead bushes that used to be there. There's an area to sit behind the soil bed with a swing and there are colonial pillars as well. We'd like something low enough that we can still see the street, etc. Any ideas?

Hey Sarah,

Sound like a good place for Roses. Contrary to popular myths, roses are really fairly easy to grow. Pruning them takes a little knowledge. Care is fairly easy, only need a Rose Fungiside, and Rose fertilizer. Just read the labels. This will bring color (your choice), variety (your choice), and asthetics to work with your pillars.

I live in orlando florida and my backyard is mostly sand, have three dogs and can't keep the lawn?

My backyard is mostly sand, what is a cheap solution for landscaping to keep the dirt out of my house? It's an old neighborhood so lots of trees and leaves...sand flys all over the place when my dogs run and need a cheap solution to control the sand from getting in the house.need cheap landscaping ideas please!

Take a look at mulches. Shredded bark comes to mind in my area, because it is cheap and easily found due to the sawmills in the area. Where you live, it would be best to go to one of the larger Landscape supply centers to see what kind of mulches may be available in your area cheap. Buying by the pickup load or even having it delivered in a dump truck will be cheaper than buying it one 50lb bag at a time.

That being said, if you really do not care what the mulch looks like and just want to cover the ground with something, you might want to consider getting bales of hay or straw to cover the bare areas, especially where the dogs are kept. Straw more often times than not has no weed seeds in it, and Hay does. Mulching with Hay often brings in the types of grasses that can take hold in a tough growing situation. Again, look at whats available in your area, thats where you will find your lowest cost choice.

Zero-scaping ideas for Florida?

My parents have 5 acres in Florida. They used to have lawn.. but the irrigation started giving them problems so they didn't use it.. now the lawn and landscaping just looks terrible. Rocks/gravel aren't good to use in Florida because they sink into the ground... not to mention Florida doesn't have rocks so it's very expensive and they have a large landscaped area around the house. I'm down there occasionally and do maintenance in the yard when I'm there.. but only about every other month. Anybody have good ideas for zero-scaping in Florida?

If you mean xeriscaping, these should give you plenty of ideas. Good luck...

Guide to Winter Gardening For Homeowners in PA

I look forward each day during the winter. To some, lamenting the past days of fall with its bright foliage in the landscape, and feeling down that the dull days of winter are here. For me I have grown to appreciate each day and look forward to interests in landscapes that are there knowing that many dazzling displays can be found by careful observation.

Watering plants can be be on your list of things to do. Make it a point to get out and check on your plants. The ground may not be frozen and plants still use water. If the ground is not frozen you can still water if the ground will accept the water. Most plants are dormant so the amount of watering is not as high as in the hotter seasons. Evergreens lose water through their needles in the winter. So if one keeps watering as long as possible into the winter, seedlings and plants will suffer less stress. Winter drying of evergreens is a major stress factor in overwintering.
