I have a spot in the backyard, next to mypatio, that has been washed bare because water pools there, but doesn't drain.
I heard that I might be able to cover the area with dirt (and grass seed) to elevate the base. Will this work?
If you add dirt to elevate the base, you may solve the problem in that one little area but you might create a new problem elsewhere. If you raise the spot by your patio, will the water be able to drain away or will it just find a new low spot to pool?
You need to make sure that the water can actually drain away. It either has to be absorbed into the ground or it has to travel off the property.
You can install a french drain, or put in a drain collector tied to a drainage system that allows the water to discharge off the property. If the water comes from gutter downspouts, you can have the downspouts tied in to a drainage system.
If you need further help, you can ask for an estimate from a licensed contractor, and they will often tell you how they plan to solve the problem. Check online or in your phone book under Drainage or Landscape drainage.

When I bought my home the previous own left about 200 industrial drainage tiles with blue ceramic tops (various rectangle sizes). I am currently landscaping my property using all of the stones from an old barn, bricks from a chimney taken down and old barn wood to make raised garden beds.
Does anyone have ideas of how to use the drainage tiles to add to my landscaping?
We have some old clay pipes and drainage tiles also. We use the 12" long drain tiles set on end as stands for container planters. I'm thinking of taking the drain pipes which are about 3-4 feet long and placing three of them together at different heights in the ground with the bell ends up, and planting things in them. You might use them as corner accents for the raised beds. Stand them on end, fill them with potting soil and plant something you like in them.

I would suggest hiring a Landscape Architect to help you deal with the drainage problems. Unfortunately, many 'home builders' built on swampland which has no drainage.
A Landscape Architect knows grades and codes when dealing with these kinds of problems. An LA would be able to tell you IF your drainage problem can be fixed, and can get it done. It probably won't be an easy fix, if it can be fixed at all. By hiring an LA, the LA is then responsible if the diverted water impacts another person's property, which saves you from being sued.
Also, a Landscape Engineer is even more qualified than an LA. The bad part is that either of these solutions will be EXPENSIVE. There is no way around it.

You could also put in a drain tile that will divert water away from your house and yard. Just dig down about 2 feet put in a layer of gravel place the drain tile down and add more gravel to almost the top of the tile. Cover with dirt and plant your grass on top. We have this around our house and haven't had any water problems. You do have to slope it to one side though so the water will flow to a drainage area.Where ours drains we have planted a flower bed to cover the area of the tile (which looks like a 8 inch plastic culvert) this way the flowers get plenty of water and it is not an eyesore.

I am getting very confusing estimates on re-doing our existing kool deck with pavers in regards to drainage. One contractor says no drain is needed and others have a two inch deco drain going in.
Please help. Do we need a drain or is slanting the pavers somehow enough?

Water has to go somewhere. You do not want it sitting on your patio. Ideally, the pavers would pitch in the direction...
