I have a long narrow flower bed along the entire back wall (south wall) of my house that is completely empty. This bed gets long hours of hot Texas sun and adjoins my swimming pool deck, so the plants should not be messy, drop a lot of petals, leaves and should not have sharp or pointy leaves, thorns, etc. I would like ideas for tropical, colorful plants that would be good to plant here. The bed is only a couple feet wide, so plants that would not grow too wide would be great. I was thinking of a small palm (if there is such a thing), hibiscus, but would also like to plant some perennials. Dianthus are really the only perennial flowers that have consistently done well in this spot. There is a sprinkler system and I will put bark mulch in the bed. I also have a couple large pots that will be placed on the pool deck and would like ideas for colorful plants to go in those, but they must be draught tolerant because plants in pots dry out very quickly here.
You have alot of very special if this & that. Without knowing you're area I would suggest you go to a local nursery and really look around. You will know what you like when you see it.
They should be able to recommend or direct you in the right direction if you tell them what you said above. Also they will be familiar with the drought tolerant plants they carry along with which plants would do good as tropical--and if they can be outside all year.
Good Luck I would love to be able to landscape around my pool.

i live in north carolina and my backyard has a lot of trees so the sun hits only certain spots throughout the day. i want pretty and colorful flowers, plants, shrubs etc... and if possiblee for a low budget!! any ideas are helpful!!! THANKS
There are many plants for shade, but you may not get the same bold color as you will with sun plants. Try these ideas, then fill in with annuals, such as impatients. The best bet for shade are daylilies -- buy ones that bloom at different times to get continual color, hydrangea (but dont put them too close to tree roots), hostas (not much color in flowers, however) Also, look for shade plants with unique leaves (hellaborus, cora bells).
Also, many ground cover flower in the spring and can handle the areas under trees:

Our new pool is beautiful, but the landscape is a bore! All the plants that were recommended for placing near a pool are just plain green. Are there any colorful plants that are okay for use near a swimming pool? We live in southern California and the pool area gets direct sunlight all day.

If I were to purchase a swimming pool, and use sand as part of a landscaping around the pool, would this affect the filtering system if the sand falls into the swimming pool, or can I also have sand on the swimming pool floor?
Sand on the bottom of your Pool on purpose, is a bad idea and won't work. However sand around the pool is fine as part of the landscaping. Your pool filter will just need finer catch baskets to catch any sand that accidentally falls into the water. Your pool filter is perfectly capable of handling small amounts of sand that can be back-flushed out when you clean your pool. I have several tons of sand surrounding my pool and it's been this way for over 8 years. No problems sand related ever.........Good Luck!
my grandparents have a beautiful inground swimming pool- however their age and finances etc have held them back from the upkeep of the landscaping around the pool area. This weekend my brothers and sisters and hubbies were going to get together and surprise them and -re-do it while they are gone out of town for the weekend. We only have about $150 bucks though. We thought we could just weed and re-do some of the areas where it was landscaped with small crushed rock- but is now overgrown with weeds. Tonight me and DH went out and measured just those smaller areas and as long as I'm calculating right I came up with needing 27 square yards of river rock- at $25 dollars a yard that's over $550 dollars- which obviously we don't have. Guess I didn't think it would be so much. HELP? Any advice on any alternatives????? It's just completely over-run with weeds- it's been 15 or 20 years since it was landscaped- they just cant keep up w/ the upkeep anymore. IDEAS?
Maybe I calculated wrong.. so can you help me?
area 1 = 9.5' x 3.5'
area 2= 22' x 3.5'
area 3= 6' x 4.5'
area 4= 30' x 3.5'
so if I figured it out right.. the square footage:
area 1= 33 sq feet and 36 sq inches
area 2= 77 sq feet and 0 sq inches
area 3= 27 sq feet and 0 sq inches
area 4= 105 sq feet and 0 sq inches
so then I came up with 245 feet and then got 27.2 square yards???? Am I completely wrong????? One website said that 1 sq foot of 2" river rock will cover 90 square feet?????
llib thanks- we will be using landscape fabric underneath =) We are planning on weeding everything and putting the fabric down and then doing what we can with the 150 dollars worth of river rock! Thanks for the advice and help with calculations
OK - here's the math you need -
A = Total sq. ft. to be covered = 245 sq ft
B = Depth of material = up to you (3" is good for this estimate) = .25 ft.
A X B = cu. ft. required
245 X .25 = 61.25
You need 65.25 cu. ft. of stone to do the job
There are 27 cu. ft. per cu. yd.
61.25/27=2.27
You need 2.27 cu. yds. of stone to do the job.
Thats about 3 tons of stone - it's usually sold by the ton.
Don't forget the weed barrier cloth and also the delivery charge.

Swimming Pool Landscaping | Concrete Landscape Curbing
Now a day’s many people are willing to do landscaping only around their swimming pool just to add an appealing look to their home and to swimming pool. In swimming pool landscaping you have to consider four main factors they are:
• Safety – It is always better to consider the safety in swimming pool. It is a very dangerous place for children’s. Use skit free pavers around the pool and also construct a fence around the pool.
Luxury Real Estate – Swimming Pools | Dream Retreats Landscaping
Series Part 7: Luxury Swimming Pools
We thought we would end this Water Week Series with some of the World’s Greatest Pools. Any piece of luxury real estate worth it’s salt will probably have a swimming pool on the property. Inside, outside, or both perhaps. This is a guide to the most luxurious, most insane, most expensive, most photographed and largest swimming pools in the World!
Although this started as a serious look at swimming pools in luxury homes, it is now just a little fun. As I began researching swimming pools I discover some pretty amazing variations. Not all these are private, luxury swimming pools, in fact, some of them are just plain scary. But they were so interesting I decided to forget about private pools and just make this a compilation of swimming pools from around the world.
