My new concrete driveway is now higher than the yard. Any cheap landscaping ideas to make it look better?
House

In some spots it's only 2", but in others it's 4" higher than the yard. The driveway is 200' long and has some curves in it.

Planting some low level evergreen bushes to draw your eyes away from the edge of the driveway would help. Planting evergreens will provide a draw year round.

Is it normal for a Driveway/Landscape company to ask for a 45% payment upfront?
House

I've booked in a landscape company to pave/landscape the front of my house and i guess the 45% upfront payment is for materials. but you always see on Watchdog that certain companys never come back?! i've never used this company before and wondered if this payment amount was normal? any help on this would be gratefully received. thanks

There are an awful lot of spouters on here need to get a grip! Why should a contractor (whether on credit or not) get all your materials for you, supply the labour for you, pay his ads, taxes, insurance, telephone and even his shopping bill before getting any money? If the contractor is recommended word of mouth, has an office or showroom which costs money, has paid yellow pages etc, his van signed, professional paperwork (lithograph letterheads), quality business cards, and lives local, he has so much money paid out already he cannot afford to run off with a meagre deposit! Typical overheads for a small (4 people business) with a showroom are way in excess of a deposit from you. We charge 50% on agreeing the contract, the company next door take full payment up front, (they turned down 38k work last year because the client would not pay up front), when all is said and done, I can't go to asda and tell them i will pay half the bill now and half when mr bloggs pays me! Many companies (large or small) use an overdraft facility (though we don't), I bet you wouldn't like to pay the interest charged for using the overdraft to fund YOUR work. And the tight public nail prices down so tight, there isn't enough money left, you employed people should try it, though some of you probably have, t is why you are now employed by somebody else!

I'm trying to determine whether to have my very long dirt driveway repaired or asphalted? Money important.
House

I live in the high desert of Southwest New Mexico. Rain has worn down the driveway. The dirt driveway fits the landscape but, if I get it repaired, will I be throwing away my money? Should I asphalt instead? My diveway is approximately 75 yards long and 18 feet wide.

There's a soil stabilizer on the market that bonds soil particles together to prevent erosion, but it gives you the same look as a dirt driveway. Check out www.soiltac.com
If they can use it on dirt runways, it should help you out.

How should I landscape an area alongside my driveway to screen out the neighbors and be low maintenance?
Collage Dream, Winslow

The area is 5' wide by 46' feet long. I already plan to plant baby thuja trees for the (eventual) privacy. What else should I do? Ornamental pernial plants in front of the thujas? What about the covering? I think gravel/rock is too harsh, and mulch might get expensive every year.
Forgot to mention I live in NJ

The first thing you have to do is decide if you want mulch or ornamental gravel. That is a decision only you can make. Mulch looks more natural and you only need to replenish it once every three years when you put it on thick enough(a minimum of 4" depth). Gravel is less maintenance except for removing organic debris, the thujas will shed a lot. Gravel has fewer if no weeds but you can't plant perennials in gravel because of the need for landscape fabric with the gravel. Well I could go on and on about the benefits and short comings of both. If you decide to go with mulch then some daylilies in front of them would be a good choice. Some mums mixed in would be nice also.

What is the cheapest material to use to make a nice looking curb around my driveway?
Cobble Stone Driveway Design in New York

I have a large circular driveway and when I moved in, it had old railroad ties as border. Well, needless to say, most were rotted so we had to take them to the dump. Now, we have no border. I have a gravel driveway and can not afford to pave it but I thought a really nice curb and some nice landscaping would spruce up the front yard. Any suggestions on what to do to make a nice looking curb that can be contoured into a half circle?

For a residential driveway, nothing will improve the appearance like brick or paving stones. Wood, in my opinion, is not attractive and creates problems in mowing, and will eventually need replacing.

I am getting mixed results from 3 different people I got advice for my driveway. Over a period of 20 years my driveway has sunk about a foot or so and I decided to just lay dirt and some gravel on top. Now I am ready to get someone to pour some concrete to make a sturdier driveway. I asked a few people and here is the top 3 things I was told. Landscaping pictures may include water fountains, photos of trees, ideas of color schemes, container garden designs, entryway landscaping and foundation paintings. These pictures are not easily captured in cameras. Because of its colorful designs and varieties of angles, landscaping...

Landscaping Stones Used For Walls, Stepping Stones As Well As ...

The aesthetic as well as functional use of the landscaping stones help to raise the value of one’s property and its artful application may enhance the natural elements that one employs, such as plants and softscape. Softscape consists of all the animate, horticultural elements that form the design of landscape and these include stone walls, tile patios as well as brick walkways.

A lot of attention is usually paid to the animate things present in the garden and this includes tending to trees and lawns as well as vegetable plants but, often, little attention is paid to the inanimate counterparts, which include stone and soil. Landscaping stones are the canvas and the frame of the art of landscaping.
