This is a site that has things like "Plan a garden" "Paint a room" crafts, recepies and a whole lot more. I use this site all the time. I recomend that you create an account with them, it's free and you will get a lot more options. Trust me, it's a great site, and even their customer service is very profetional.
HGTV had quite a few landscape plans for "waterwise" landscapes. You can check them out at:

I live in Northern Ca (Sacramento Area) and I am planning a tropical themed backyard. It rarely gets below 30 degrees in the winter (maybe a little lower at night, but i can get those blankets to prevent the plant from freezing) and at its hottest point it gets up to 115 degrees in the summer.
With that being said, which plants would do the best in my area? Ideas in flowers, ground cover, and any other suggestions or help would be great! Thanks in advance
Are there any sites online where it shows which tropical plants survive in this area?
I have tropical plants around my pool area and love the look.
Yucca plants are so easy to grow and look great.
Umbrella plant also looks tropical and is very easy to grow.
I also have: both red and yellow cannas, bird of paradise, and saga palms.
Oh yes, Hibiscus. I have 4 different colors of those.
Michelia alba campana. We finished our backyard excavation (careful to leave 5 ft around the tree trunk) one week ago. In that time, the tree has lost nearly all of its leaves. The tree is about 20+ feet high. The fallen leaves are a mix of brown, yellow and yellow with brown spots. We haven't seen it this bald in the 1 year we've had the house. We did notice that about 3 roots with a diameter of 2-3 inches were cut off in the excavation process. Not sure if this was the reason as I've read that root disturbance is tough on this tree. Or could it be that there was extra dirt (about 1-1.5 feet) piled around the trunk?
Is there anything we can do? We love the tree and were trying to excavate and plan landscaping around it...any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
remove extra dirt on roots, add mulch and water heavily. now would be a good time to prune it back

Plan a drought tolerant landscape | Backyard Oasis
Even moist climates occasionally have droughts and certain areas in any yard may be dry or have constant sun where plants with low water needs will thrive.
There is also a shortage of water in many areas so water conservation is a practice we should all use.
Drought-tolerant landscapes will need less water, which can save you a lot of money if you live in a city or town. Drought resistant plants also require less work.
Drought-tolerant plants are not just cacti. There are numerous varieties of plants that will fit well into your landscape and will add color, interest and use to your home. You will find that most native plants are drought resistant.
