Backyard Landscaping Ideas & Custom Patio Design?
Photo: Custom pool ideas, landscape designs and backyard concepts

Looking for some inspirational landscaping ideas for the backyard.

A good backyard landscaping idea is to use evergreens. They will add a stately nature to the feel of your home while keeping it welcoming and warm. Many people like to use deciduous trees in the yard but a better idea is to use evergreens. Evergreens give the yard the structure and stability it needs for a good backyard landscaping idea and design.

Another good backyard landscaping idea is to use hardscape. This is the use of things like rocks, fences and walls. These can make your yard look very interesting during all of the seasons. You can have climbing plants on it in the summer & spring and trees around it that will look great in winter.

Backyard landscaping... how much will it cost to put in some concrete and grass?
Pool Area decoration and design

I have a 25' X 66' backyard that I'll need to landscape. I think I'll want a concrete patio somewhere around 10' x 12' feet at the sliding glass door. A 1' stuccoed retaining wall about 2' from the back fence, and grass every where else. What do you think it will to do each a) if I have someone do it, and b) if I am patient and do it myself?

I would have the contractor do the cement work, you can do it yourself a little cheaper, but for a pad that size there are a lot of things that can go wrong. At least if the contractor screws it up, he is on the hook to fix it.

The grass part all depends on what type of grass, if you start from seed or go with sod. Seed is definately cheaper ( $30.00 to $100.00 depending on the type you use) sod is easier, and is fully grown when you buy it. However it will cost alot more than seed.

Any suggestions on landscaping a backyard in a "pet-friendly" way?
Elegant Pool Area with Stone Floor

I have great back yard and beautiful stone patio, however I have six active dogs who spend most days outside. Right now the yard is a mud-pit because I do not want to put down grass only to be trampled. Are there any websites or books? Also any suggestions would be great!

I agree with Jonathan S above. But one thing I know from experience is that dogs like to make paths around the yard. They will have these little dirt paths of their favorite routes around and across the yard. If you end up landscaping the yard, you need to keep these paths open. Consider looking into a hardscaping (rock or something similar) on these paths that will stand up to the dogs feet. My parents have a people yard and a dog yard. The dog yard has trees (natural oaks) and leaf litter and grass clippings on the ground. It ain't pretty, but the dog knows it's his place to use the bathroom where he wants and by leaving the leaves and then dumping the grass clippings, there is no mud. The dog gets to go in the people garden, but only under supervision. He also has a cemented patio with a large dog house with sawdust inside. He loves that place. So do our cats, and sometimes we catch them sharing it.

My question has to do with landscaping. I have a mole in my landscaping, I need some good advice.?
Grill Area

I am getting ready to treat my yard with diazinon or grub x because I think I have grub worms. In my backyard around the patio it is landscaped and the other day I actually saw the little beast for a second but by the time I got out there he had already went back into the mulch. The mole is in my landscaping and I do not exactly know how to handle this. Should I just do nothing and maybe he will go away after he has got his belly full of grub worms or do I treat under the mulching where the plants are at. I do not think I should treat for insects under the mulching in the landscaping.

Someone's advice would truly be appreciated. Thanks.

The mole guy

I bought a device at Lowes that you put batteries in and stuck in the ground close to where they are and it wound vibrate periodically they hate that. I had good results. It looks like a giant tent stake

Please help with suggestions for backyard landscaping, design.?
Side Yard

I am having a lot of trouble deciding on a design, and features for my backyard. It is a pie shaped lot on a cul-de-sac.
I live in Southern Ontario, Canada.

Here are some pictures and a 'map' of my yard:
http://backyardquestion.googlepages.com/ backyard

I have an easement (5 feet) on both sides (not the back) of my property, so any permanent structures are out - but, and plants, walkways, etc are okay - they can be temporarily moved if absolutely needed.

I am planning on building a shed this year - fairly large and placing in in the top right of the yard as pictured above (near the #6)

Some things we want are:
Interesting plants. Some maintainence is okay, but we don't have time to spend hours every weekend - an intensive spring/fall cleanup is okay

Walkway of some kind - preferrably no poured concrete

Patio area. I am thinking of a small area (~15 feet wide circle, interlock brick, with built in firepit in middle

More details at the website link. Thank

Around the easement, planting azaleas of various colors will work out really well for you. They like the sunlight, and if you feed them mid-fall and again right after everything thaws out in spring you get some of the most brilliant blooms in outrageous quantity you've ever seen, especially when they get matured. On the sides, Leyland cypresses will provide a cool looking natural border, and shade later on, but you have to plant them properly. They need to be about 10 feet apart, and it will take time for them to fill in. You may want to try dogwoods instead. They also bloom and flower out really well every spring, especially if you do fall and spring feeding. You can get large, flat paving bricks to make the walkway and patio area. They have an interlock built in, and they look great. Just make sure the ground is as flat as can be before you lay them down, and take a rubber mallet and tap them into place. I'd use them for the walkway and patio. I would also try makong a circle out of them off one corner of the deck for the patio. It should look fairly cool. A clay firepot or one of the large copper fire bowls would look right at home in that. Just remember to get a proffessional to show you how to plant the azaleas and dogwoods right. It will make all the difference in the world for how well they do, reduce maintenance, improve water consumption, and they'll look better year round.

    Backyard Landscaping Project

The boys and I will begin the landscaping project in our backyard. The swing set gets installed on Wednesday. Once that is in place, we can plan the perimeter space. I have been surfing the web for various ideas and picked a few inspiration pics. The boys and I will head to the nursery and hand pick everything. This will take a few weekends to complete. They love landscaping and are a huge help!
