I have had an un-landscaped front yard for 5+ years because I don't want to do it wrong. Of the 5 contractors I had give me ideas with estimates, NONE of them ever got back with me. I figured it was harder than I thought.
anyway, What are the methods, layer by layer that landscaping material needs to be laid? How can I keep weeds from growing through underlayment and new landscaping? What are the most mainenance free desert plants I can landscape with? What watering system should be used?
Your best bet is to look around your neighborhood to see who has to maintain their yard, and who doesn't. There are so many options out there, it is difficult offer a single suggestion. If you want to xeriscape, you won't need a watering system; once your plants are well established, they will survive on what nature provides.
Do not be afraid, if you make a mistake, you can correct it. Change is good, but you have to put in something that may or may not be the look you're looking for. If you don't do anything, you'll never know.
You don't have to do the whole yard at once, just start with one area, come up with a plan, and then execute it. Make sure you consider the view from the inside of your house as well as curb appeal.

I need some backyard landscaping designs to get ideas for my own yard. Is there a website where I can find these? Or if you can send me the design or your backyard it would be appreciated. I live in arizona and have a fairly big backyard any ideas (ie. what plants, trees rocks, grass, stone walkways etc.) thanks
I was looking for something else and came acrossed a website that offers tips on finding good landscape software. The sidebar to the left on the site shows available software. Here it is. Hope it helps!

I live on the beach. Needless to say my yard is SAND! What a pain in the bum. I have four dogs plus foster dogs in and out all the time. They track sand in all the time.
I've got the front yard all figured out. Had sod put down and it's perfect. I don't want grass in my backyard. I had a nightmare of an experience with a landscaping company. I ordered (and prepaid) for my entire yard (which is huge) to be done in Arizona red rock. They delivered and laid enough to cover 1/3 of my yard. (I'm still dealing with the company, not looking good. I'm not getting a refund, or more gravel.) I'm leaning toward mulching my yard. I don't want to have to shell out another large chunk of money for gravel. I don't want grass because they put the gravel in the dead center of my yard. I think it would look goofy. Plus I don't want the mowing company to ever enter the back yard. I want a no nonsense, little maintenance option. Anyone have any ideas?

I do have a fountain. It sits in the center of the yard and is surrounded by a flower bed. I have several "planted" areas. With palm trees and such. I have patio areas with furniture and the grill and typical patio stuff. I should have said I was just specifically looking for a good ground cover. My bad.
Thanks for the ideas!
have you ever heard of raised garden beds?that way you dont have to worry about improving soil structure.build boxes out of treated pine sleepers (unless vegie patch then use something else as treated timber can contain traces of arsnic and can leach into vegies) you could line the bottom with newspaper or a weed matting and fill with a garden mix.plant plants and mulch with a sugarcane mulch or equivilent.with the red rock you could use it in between the raised garden beds as a wonderful looking pathway.
Im looking to do some garden landscaping & in need of some websites that I can maximize every bit of space that I have.
Im start'g on the side yard 1st & have put in my 2 trees & some sod & put in a drip system. But now I need to frame the area around the sod & my trees & in between the 2 (roughly 26'x22').
But not sure where to put the flowers. I intend to use a total of 30+ varieties as this will be my Master Garden.
Is there a website that will let me create this on my own by color? Im only using shades of Blues, Pinks, & Purples and White and a Purple Alyssum as a ground cover.
Or any websites that could/would show me layouts that have been sketched & used to give me some ideas?
Im think'g of mixing a Mediterranean Garden, a Country Garden, & Arizona Native Garden for my Master Garden.
WTF every happend to paper and pencil -
Draw the thing out - map out your own paths, plants and features - don't limit yourself to what's in a web tool.
+ Don't forget to draw the walls and do a vertical plan for climbers, creepers, bamboos and cover - think colour too.
You need books -
Get the pots and features you want and arrange them in the space - real space - work out paths and bushes - then draw it up.
So, I am 17 years old, I just graduated from high school at the end of the previous school year. As far as work experience, I have worked with my dad in his cleaning business for practically my entire life. I have volunteered doing many different things from landscaping to doing some technical stuff to moving office equipment, people from houses, etc. Because I will not be 18 till September, and I will hopefully be leaving in 4-6 months, I need to find a good job as soon as possible. Also with it still being summer, people have not yet gone back to school and companies will most likely not be looking for another 1-2 months. I am just looking for any suggestions, ideas, w/e.
O and I live in Arizona if that makes any difference.
you can always go to a restaurant and wait tables. its not the best job, but you can get pretty decent money in tips, and it will be an income until you find a better job

Landscaping Ideas: Free Online Gardening Tips for a Beautiful Yard ...
If you’re thinking about starting a garden, the first thing you need to consider is what type of garden you will have. There are many different choices and often it can be hard to pick just one, but hopefully you can narrow it down. But by narrowing it down, you’ll make the gardening experience easier on yourself and the plants. If all your plants are similar, then it shouldn’t be very hard to care for them all. So here are some of the main ga rden ideas for you to choose from.
If you’re just looking for something to look nice in your yard, you’ll want a flower garden . These are usually filled with perennial flower. Perennial flowers are flowers which stay healthy year-round. They’re basically weeds because of their hardiness, only nice looking. Different areas and climates have different flowers which are considered perennials. If you do a quick internet search for your area, you can probably find a list of flowers that will bring your flower garden to life. These usually only require work in the planting stage – after that, the flower take care of themselves. The only downside to this is that you don’t have any product to show for it.
