We live in the state of California... How would he go about getting his Landscaping Architect's License and a Landscaping Business License? Please help! (this is for Christy's question and answer) I believe its for both his career and the money… thanks!
It is amazing how inaccurate the responses people provide:
re: pondlady
you only need a minimum of an Associates degree in Landscape Architecture to qualify for the educational requirements to take the LARE.
re: Christy
If what she says is true about competition, all registered landscape architects who owns their own installation company will be out of business. It does happen in the industry, but whether you are a licensed landscape architect or not should not factor in how the installation business runs or profits.
Review the requirements for licensure from this website:

Since you said your boyfriend already have a landscaping business, he should have his business license in place already. You can always make your company name change if you so desired at your State's Corporation Commission.
Eddie George, ASLA, talks about how he became a landscape architect and his career after the NFL.
Hey! I'm a sophomore in high school, and of course I can't help but think about my future life. My grades are so and so. I like english, anatomy, and maybe enviroment. I absolutely hate chemistry and math. Someone told me that a lanscaping architect might be good. Could you please tell me about that career or some good paying jobs that don't heavily rely on stellar grades? thanks :)
Its not easy, and from what you said about math skills I would stay away from this one! It envolves a lot of math and it is very high stress! Do you like to draw? Grades are important but they are not the only thing out there! You should still try hard to get good grades because if you can get a good grade in a subject that you absolutly hate, then it shows a potential employer that not only are you able to overcome obstacles but overcome them well!

I have a recipe for success when it comes to job hunting. No matter what your skills, or how nice your resume is, you will not get a job if you do not get an interview.
I recommend blitzing all the landscape architects that you would like to work with and customize a cover letter for each of them. Mail all of these at one time. You can find them in the phone book and on the internet if you do not know them already. The theory is that the best firms do not go looking for their employees in the newspaper or on monster. The best companies may place their positions on their website or hire head hunters. Of course there's no sense in putting all your eggs in one basket. I recommend a second mailing to include all the rest of the potential employers about two weeks after the first. This way you give yourself the best chance of getting the job you want before having to decide on whatever might just be available.
Always take time to evaluate a job offer. A few days to a week is usually acceptable. If you want to take more than a few days always send a thank you card or letter for the opportunity to interview. This is especially important if a decision on an offer is pending on their part. With this econonmy landscape design often gets cut from construction budgets first. Be wary of offers that come too quickly. Companies that burn out employees and those who hire and then fire as needed are often the ones who make the quick offers. Make sure to get an opportunity to see the office and meet the other employees before you accept. This way you get to look at how many emplyees there are and what there attitude seems to be working there.
Finally for Landscape Architecture look to large civil engineering firms. They often have a landscape architecture component as well. Even if they do not have that kind of staff already, it doesn't mean you will not be the first one.
I would also recommend that if possible get a part time job with a landscape architect before graduation. If the market is competitive for new hires than this is an easier way to get the job. having a seat in the office already goes a lot further toward full time employment than the person who is just getting a foot in the door after graduation.
Good luck.
What's the difference between a landscape designer and a landscape architect? Also, how do you become a landscape architect/landscape designer?
Well this is one of those questions where the answer has to be a bit vague...
A landscape designer is someone that generally only works with plants and 'softscaping' only theoretically designing or including structures such as walls and pathways. A designer can provide you with a quite complex landscape plan.
A landscape architect is more inclined to include very detailed information on the 'hardscaping' specifying details about the structure of a wall or paving. An architect will provide a highly detailed landscape plan drawn to scale & including specification etc.
Add to this a landscape engineer who will add construction detail & absolute specifications (e.g. - pier holes to be 300mm wide by 500mm deep with 100mm bed of 20mm clean drainage aggregate in the base etc etc)
Soooo... a landscape designer may well be a landscape architect & vice versa.
It could also be said that all landscape architects are landscape designers but not all designers are architects...
Hope this helps :)

Looking at Cemeteries as Landscape Architecture
Are you thinking about full-body donation or cremation after death? Or, have you thought about a green burial in a cemetery that eschews traditional memorials? If so, you are part of a rising majority of citizens who seek alternatives to traditional funerals. In the process, this movement has pushed the traditional U.S. cemetery into a category that relegates these burial grounds to open-air museums.
As such, these cemeteries continue to be at risk for vandalism, neglect, natural and environmental decay and scandals such as the recent Burr Oak Cemetery deceit in Illinois. But, through the help of societies for cemetery preservation and the attention of landscape architects, some cemeteries might see renewed interest in their historic values.
