Vegetable Garden?
Variegated Horseradish

I want to turn a childs sandbox into a vegetable garden. It is made of wood. It's about 3 by 3 in size. And about a foot deep. How deep should the dirt be for best results? Oh and since i will be adding new dirt is there anything I should add to it?

A foot deep is enough, but the garden plot should be at least one and a half feet high. When adding new dirt you can also add compost for nutrients and coconut coir for soil aeration.

When beginning a Vegetable Garden, what are good vegetable to begin with?
Pear Tree in Autumn

I am getting ready to start on my first vegetable garden. This season I am just preparing the soil for planting season next year and planning my garden. I was wondering what vegetables are easiest for beginners, or what vegetables grow well together. I am trying to start in on this slowly and deliberatly so that I am not in over my head.

Thanks in advance for you help!

-- Tomatoes grow like weeds
-- Peppers are pretty easy if you have long warm summers
-- If you like green beans, then they are worth growing and are very easy. They have the advantage that they enrich the soil where you grow them.
-- If you have a wall or a trellis and can keep them well watered, try cucumbers.
-- If you live in a cooler climate, you can try lettuce and radishes, but they grow bitter if the summer is hot.
-- Don't forget to grow some herbs for flavoring, such as basil, mint, oregano, and thyme, which are all very easy.

What should I do to prepare my vegetable garden for planting?
Big Green Ready for Winter

I am new to this gardening thing and I want to have a vegetable garden so that we have vegetables and fruit from early summer through late fall. I know that each vegetable has it's own PH requirements. How do I prep the soil for all the things I'm wanting to plant? Is there a fertilizer that I should use that would be good for a wide range of veggies? I live in northern Ohio. When should I start prepping the soil? When should I plant? Should I plant a second time during the season to ensure that I have veggies into the fall? What should I plant? The area I want to plant is roughly 15 X 20 ft.
We live in an area of northern Ohio that has extremely fertile farm. The soil is dark brown/black and not very much if any clay. We have high sulphur in our water so I'm assuming that the ground has a high sulphur content as well.

you can get some really good gardening info from: ohio state university.. they have a very good website for gardening info... as well as your county agriculture extention agency... check ohio government to find the web address... when i'm starting a new garden area I : cut sod out, till soil, add ammendments (compost, leaves, organic matter), and continue to add leaves and grass clippings every fall
vege gardening is a lot less complicated than it first appears from all the horticulture info
you can also visit my past answers for more info on improving soil conditions.

How to kill flies in my vegetable garden?
Big Red

Its been raining the past few days and all of a sudden there are tons of flies in my vegetable garden! They don't seem to be flying around the dog poop much, but more towards the vegetable garden. How do I get rid of the flies without damaging my vegies, preferably without using harmful chemicals?

My guess is you used manure in your soil & that's where the flies laid their eggs & completed their cycle in the ground. The rain just speeded up the process - they'll fly away. In the meantime don't add anymore manure, and be sure and remove any fallen fruits or veggies that will attract them.

Vegetable garden has yellow or brown leaves, but the vegetables look great. Should I worry?
Big Yellow Ready for Winter

I have a vegetable garden and some of the leaves are turning yellow or brown. However, the vegetables on the plants look great and continue to grow. Is there anything I should do or worry about?

where are you? how long are you into the growing season? It could be water, too much on the leaves and not enough getting to the roots, water on the leaves mixed with direct sunlight, the end of the growing period for some vegetables, and perhaps questions with fertilizer.

The farm’s chief researcher, Grace Romero, during a tour of the vegetable gardens last Saturday, said, “The festival is all about the vegetables, including a workshop on preparing your garden, a tomato tasting and a peek at some of the new varieties we’re working on before they appear in the [Burpee] catalogue.” Our tour of the Cook’s Garden (gourmet vegetables) revealed to this denizen of urban/suburban environments that Burpee’s, a company founded by the visionary 18-year-old W. Atlee Burpee in 1876, developed not only the Big Boy tomato but also Iceberg lettuce and that, “among the thousands of plants being tested,” according to Romero, “we might choose only 20 varieties.” A tour of the Harvest Garden brought into sharp relief more than 500 tomatoes of every size, shape and color, including the Golden Mama, the only variety that retains its golden color in sauces, as well as a host of other vegetables, such as squash, peppers,...
