Hello,
I am planning to build a bamboo/cane-shade in my roof garden (or rather pay someone to to it :) I am looking for ideas... I'd like the shade to cover only part of the roof area to provide shade in summer (summers in Malta can be very hot!). The shade has to stand strong wind, sun and rain and be aesthetically pleasing. Any design ideas?
Many thanks,
Inga
Hi, see if you can get someone to build you a dome out of bamboo, it doesn't need to be completely solid to give you the shade that you need and would look really natural on your roof garden.

Im trying to re-design my garden but we are having really bad weather recently and its filled up the trenches i have dug for my new walls with rain. We have really bad drainage in the garden so its not draining away quickly. Can anyone suggest an inexpensive way to cover/protect the garden from the rain which would allow me to continue working in the garden at the same time?
My garden is 5m wide by 9m long (if that makes any difference?) I was going to nail polythene to the fences to cover the garden but i thought that might rip and blow away in the wind?! Any other ideas are most welcome! Thanks
Im redesigning the garden ie, building walls, changing levels etc, so it has to be something that will allow me to do this without the ground getting wet - like a gazebo or something.
The fact that your trench filled with water should tell you something about your soil and future problems. I can help you with both the drainage and other problems, however, not being G.. I can only help in real time.
Be grateful for this problem. Plants you may have placed would be subject to rot or worse. Now you can correct the problems, at a less expense. Let the rain fall. Put a yardstick or measuring device in the pit/trench and measure how much it lowers or raises per day. Do this for a week and monitor the rainfall during this time.
This will tell us if you need modified soil, gravel, or a simple
irrigation diversion. I'm called cheap ( I prefer frugal) by my wife and people I design for. I am sure I can help, however, I need to know the water levels and the plants you wish to use.
Let the rain fall. A year from now it may or it may fall even more. We will deal with what is as it is an indication of what was and can be. This way we can deal with today and a worse case.
Good Luck. I am at gjgjobs@yahoo.com.

What is the impact of a well designed Rain Garden on the environment and how much capacity is needed per 1,000 square feet of run-off?
Check out this link, for answers to ALL your questions: http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/runoff/rg/rgm anual.pdf
In a nutshell, you need 1000 sq' of capacity; however, it depends on how many downspouts you have and if they evenly divide up the roof square footage. If you run all your downspouts to one location, then the 'rain garden' would need to hold all this water. Size and shape would be up to you. So if you built a oval garden, like I did and you had all your downspouts flow into one location, you could have potentially a depression 10' x 15' x 4" deep (example). I built 3 - 8'x10' rain gardens that overflow into each other. The first contains bog type plants, the second (or first overflow garden) contains normal moisture requirement plantings, the third contains drought tolerant plants. ok.so for science class, we've each been individually designing an energy efficient house. Our project has to include a drawing or a model of the house, including an explanation with seven or more design features talking about the positive and negative features about them. we MUST include a description of what the energy efficient appliances do, and include the positive features and negative features about them.
I need help with the following design features, any information would be helpful!
Double Pane windows, Solar Panels, Energy efficient lightbulbs, Water (harvesting, bathroom, kitchen, gardening)
Energy Efficient Appliances, Vegetable garden, Wind power, and rain water harvesting
we also have to choose a location as to where our house would be located and why, I chose singapore for the climate. any other info or help would be much appreaciated. THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS
first of all, root around the following website: http://www.motherearthnews.com/
you should be able to address your design issues, or at least find referrals to other sources. but...singapore is unnecessary. you can go green anywhere. specifically, look into solar passive homes, they can be built ANYWHERE and still save you tons of $$ on heating and cooling costs. california, vermont, idaho, hawaii, florida, where ever you want. perhaps they're looking for physical characteristics, such as placing your home on a south facing lot if you live in the north but if your in the south or other hot climate you want to be on a north side property. another good source is the Energy Star program: http://www.energystar.gov/ that should help with appliances and stuff. understand i won't do your homework for you, but if have any other questions, i'd be glad to help just email me. good luck.

How to Construct a Rain Garden - eXtension
Released August 17, 2009
LONDON, Ohio – When installed properly, rain gardens capture water, reducing irrigation needs and storm water flow, while beautifying the landscape. Visitors to Ohio State University’s Farm Science Review can get more information on the construction and maintenance of rain gardens, which are becoming more popular in urban areas across Ohio.
Dave Dyke, an Ohio State University Extension educator in agriculture and natural resources, will present “Rain Gardens” at 11 a.m. on Sept. 23 in the Utzinger Garden. The Utzinger Garden is located on Friday Avenue of the Review’s exhibitor grounds. Farm Science Review will be held Sept. 22-24 at the Molly Caren Agricultural Center in London, Ohio.
Dyke will provide an overview of rain garden installation and maintenance focusing on selecting a location, design, plant selection and weed control.
“There are many misconceptions about rain gardens, from what a rain garden should look like, to plant selection, to misinformation about soil amendments,” said Dyke. “Part of the presentation is designed to clear up some of those misconceptions.”
