I live in an apartment and have no yard, patio, etc. We aren't really allowed to have anything outside our doors on the sidewalk. I love to plant and garden and I miss having the space to do it. Is there any way to, inexpensively, do this indoors? What kind of things can I plant?
Details, please!
Depending on how much light(from a window) you have, you might need a grow light. They are relatively cheap. You can purchase a shop light at a hardware store, walmart, home depot, lowes etc. You will need special full spectrum light bulbs though. You can usually get these at big garden centers or order them online at burpees or a greenhouse site. I have a limited budget, so my plants are usually "hand-me-downs". I.E. avacado seeds from an avacado from the grocery, grapefruit, pieces of friends plants rooted, pineapple. You can find how to grow these plants at gardenweb.com. Also at the end of the season garden centers have plants selling for pretty cheap because if they don't sell them they are probably going to have to throw them out.
www.cookinggarden.com has lots of gardening information.
I want to make an indoor pond with a waterfall and some fish, i also want the garden to have bamboo and various bushes and unique trees so i can get the japanese style look. How much will it cost.
Well a huge part of your question is how much the matierals are that you want to use. Some plants can be really reasonable and others can be expensive. What kind of fish you use will also made a difference in your bottom line because like Koi fish are more expensive than Gold fish. And what about the rock you use in the design.
What I would do is make a list of all the materials down to the decorative rock, pond pumps and everything to maintain your pond. Go to a garden center and find out about the plants and how much they will run you and also find out if you have options for instance if you want a tree somewhere in the mix sometimes a smaller, younger tree than you eventually want may cost less than the tree the exact size you want.
I would think you could easily be out 10,000.00 or more but, you really won't know until you price everything out. And I would price everything out and then double it. Just because unexpected things happen and sometimes things simply end up costing more than you realise or you decide to go for a different plant or fish than you originally priced.
Hope that helps...Good luck and have fun with your renovation.

I have an indoor garden where these tiny little gnats seem to spring forth like wild-flowers after a long rainy winter from the soil of my plants. I have a few yellow fly strips up, however, after about a week and a few hundred flies later, they stop having any space left for more flies!
I have tried nematodes and ladybugs, however those are very expensive require lots of work. My indoor garden, because of where I live, is going to be prone to these bugs no matter what I do.
I have a small outdoor garden where spiders have taken residence and seem to keep my bug problem at bay, and I have had MUCH experience with spiders and how beneficial they can be as predators. I always leave 2-3 in or around my house or garage that are out of reach to keep my bug problems at bay. (we all have flies, face it...)
Is there a "safe" species of spider that I can introduce into my very small indoor garden that will keep the bug problem at bay? Can a "safe" sepcies be kept under control?
Curious answers, I agree with some, not with others. (also a degreed horticulturist)
There is no one general pest control method. For example, the insecticidal soap works great on soft bodied insects, but not the hard shelled. Plus the soap can severely harm certain plants. Horticultural oil works by smothering insects, but once again, can harm certain plants. Neem is selective, diatomaceous earth is selective, pyrethrum isn't all that safe (even if it is from nature....so is tobacco/nicotine and nicotine is extremely toxic and no longer available for pest control. Get the idea? Same thing with predatory/beneficial insects; they are selective and with pray mantids, they eat all the other bugs including fellow family members.
The answer..........use a multiple approach, what we call integrated pest management. First know what your pest problems are, learn how to treat each (hopefully there will be something that will work on many, be prepared to have multiple pest control options running at the same time. For example, the yellow sticky traps, make your own out of bright yellow plastic, coat with a sticky substance and when filled with pest, scrape them off and put the boards back out. Release parasitic wasps, use beneficial nematodes if you have large container plantings, use insectidial soap where appropriate, oil elsewhere, Neem, etc. By alternating treatments you keep the pests from developing a resistance. Also.......have a look at your growing environment. Is it such that you have breeding areas for these pests and through good cleanliness and techniquest you can eliminate many of these pests before they reach your plants?

I live in upstate NY and would like to start in an indoor garden with herbs and vegetables. Is it okay to start the garden if they would be primarily indoors? What are your thoughts?
You can but there is some possibility that you will draw the attention of law enforcement on the lookout for marijuana grow houses.

I am planning a garden theme wedding for July of 2009. I am struggling because I am doing an indoor wedding reception and don't know a good way to decorate and need some ideas. I was thinking something like bubble bowls filled with flowers, but I'm concerned that will be too plain... I need ideas for center peices and other decoration ideas as well.
Start visiting your local craft stores now. Many of them will be having 'summer' items on clearance, such as feather butterflies, dragonflies and such. Stock up to include them in your decorating. You'll want to see if you can find places to either buy (if you think you can re-use it) or rent arches, the kind you'd find in a garden. Place them near the door, over the cake table as well. Same thing trellis' that you could either cover in silk ivy or have garlands made by your florist (pricey though). See if there is a way the venue would allow you to bring in a water feature to add ambiance. Use as many christmas white lights as you can throughout. Large lacy ferns will help fill empty spaces.
For centerpieces I would use a tall vase with an arrangement on the top that 'drips' flowers and greenery. Put a battery operated tea light in the vase surrounded by glass marbles to give it a 'glow'. Use those butterflies and dragonflies throughout the entire venue.

A Courtyard Garden Water Fountain
The last few years have given rise to the massive decorative popularity of water garden fountains. This popularity is quite merited, however, because waterfall fountains are such beautiful and useful decorations. There are numerous sizes, styles and materials from which to choose, and you'll have no difficulty finding a garden water fountain that will complement your indoor décor.

There are many great qualities of outside water fountains that have to be experienced to truly be understood. Their large sizes, for example, make them ideal for a focal piece. They can be placed upright in the center of a room to increase visibility, and enhance their prominence as a decorative piece. Most floor water fountains are also larger than wall fountains, and require no mounting or hanging. They are typically very easy to install, requiring only an electrical outlet to plug them in. Generally speaking, water garden fountains are quite a bit larger than their wall-mounted or tabletop counterparts. However, their beauty and decorative enhancement cannot be rivaled by these smaller fountains. There is simply no substitute for a garden water fountain to create an aura of peace and tranquility in your home. Indoor floor water fountains can be found in several different materials, including cast stone, slate, glass, metal, resin, acrylic, or a combination of materials. Most of the time, cast stone fountains are used as outdoor decorations for gardens and patios. Generally, slate fountains are used indoors due to their relatively fragile but very elegant nature. These great fountains are remarkably versatile, as they work with a variety of interior designs, and they are also very sturdy and durable.
...Stevens Yard: Top Tips For Indoor Flower Gardening
Indoor flower gardens are great for many reasons. Firstly, they brighten up any decor, adding a touch of life and color. Secondly, for those folk who are housebound, or who have no yard, indoor gardens are a way to keep the thumb green. Thirdly, and most importantly for some, indoor gardens can alleviate those pesky issues such as wrong soil, bad weather, and insufficient light, that can prevent your favorite blooms from living or flowering in your great outdoors.
