Best way to overturn a garden and seed it?
Bosque da Barra - Brasil - Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

I've just moved into a house, and back garden has been left to overrun. Lots of the weeds seem to be some sort of trailer, and have deep roots.

What is the best, and easiest, way to overturn all the ground and plant grass seed? I'm not sure the soil is very good quality, but I'm sick of looking out at it at the moment!
We have a lot of cats in our area- will they rip up any plastic bags etc I put down?

If It's a small area you can steak out some black plastic for 4-6 weeks in the area you plan to cultivate. Make sure all the edges are down to prevent sun light from getting in. A shovel or garden fork will break up the dirt just fine after the plastic has been removed. Happy planting.

What is the best way to get rid of a garden full of weeds, before I plant flowers?
Jardim Botânico fotos e história do Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro

I plan on beginning my gardening this weekend. My garden currently consist of a large patch of soil loaded with weeds. What is the best way to get rid of these weeds and make sure they don't come back this summer? There is nothing planted in the garden right now, so anything goes in getting rid of the weeds.

If you have a few days or a week to wait, lay a sheet of black plastic (available in rolls at home centers or just use trash bags) over the garden when temperatures are warm.
Any weed seeds under the plastic will "cook" and become unviable when temperatures are in the 70+ degrees F range.
Otherwise, boiling water works great or you can spray Roundup if temperatures are warm enough for it to work (when weeds are actively growing).
Good Luck.

What's the best way to design a perennial garden?
HDR Garedn

I have a large space - 26' - along the front of my house. I think I'm going to make the bed about 3 or 4' in width. What's the best way to lay out my garden? Should it be symmetrical or just bunched and more free (like a cottage garden)? I'm thinking of using Delphinium, Echinacea, Daylilies, Oriental Lilies, small shrub roses (2'x3') and then some small ornamental grasses and 2-4" border flowers in the front. I think I'm also going to put a weeping redbud on the left side. Do you have any ideas for how I should do this... I'm at a loss!!!

Whether you design a formal garden (symmetrical) or informal garden (cottage style) is up to you. However, here are a few thing to consider. Mass together perennials of the same type in groups of three or five. Try to have more than one group of each species through the bed. This will help avoid the "one of everything" look. As a general rule, taller perennials (as well as the ornamental grasses) work well towards the back. When they're not in bloom they'll serve as a backdrop for the small plants. Try to plan the perennial bed so that there is something in bloom in a few different areas of the garden from spring to fall.

Good luck and have fun.

What's the best way to start a vegetable garden in my back yard?
Der Geheime Garten - The Secret Garden

I'm thinking about starting a veggie garden since I can't afford to incorporate fresh veggies and such into my diet. what's the best way to start a garden and mantain it, in the south east?

I think starting a garden is an excellent way to get your veggies without spending a lot of money... and for me it's turned into a therapeutic hobby too. :)

There are a lot of factors-- type of soil you have, amount of sun, wat size garden, what you want to grow, etc, etc....

Here's some general advice--- (the best I can do without knowing more about your yard)

Find the sunniest spot in your yard.... rent a tiller to turn the soil....

Then, see what the neighbors are growing (chances are they have the same type of soil you do)..... or take a soil sample to your local nursery and ask them, "what will grow in this type of ground"?

As for maintenance..... put down a lot of mulch.... it will keep the water in and reduce the number of weeds..... if you want to get fancy, they have plastic or burlap tarps you can put over the garden to keep weeds down.

The south east is a great climate because you have a longer growing season.... if you have good soil, you should have a bountiful garden. :)

Here's a link to an ebook that may help you-- it's pretty thorough and offers some good advice. It's titled Vegetable Garden Secrets. http://www.iwantateachingjob.com/garden. html Maybe the book can help you get started. :)

Best of luck!!

What is the quickest and easiest way to create a blooming garden border in time for summer?
An End of life

New garden is in disarray and have a new family so limited time and resorces to spend on it. A path splits the garden into two sections: a plot of grass and a narrower border. I want to tackle the border first and have been inspired by seeing other local borders packed with tulips and bright flowers.

What is the quickest and easiest way to create a pretty blooming border?

I like to use a pre-planned garden for speed and ease - all the plants and planting instructions come in the package. This site has several of them available:

  • Gandalf's Garden: Sidney Bechet - Nobody Knows The Way I Feel

Sidney Bechet (May 14, 1897 – May 14, 1959) was an American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer. He was one of the first important soloists in jazz (beating cornetist and trumpeter Louis Armstrong to the recording studio by several months and later playing duets with Armstrong), and was perhaps the first notable jazz saxophonist of any sort. Forceful delivery, well-constructed improvisations, and a distinctive, wide vibrato characterised Bechet's playing. Bechet's mercurial temperament hampered his career, however, and not until the late 1940s did he earn wide acclaim. Bechet had experience playing in travelling shows even before he left New Orleans at the age of twenty. Never long content in one place, he alternated using Chicago, New York, and Europe as his base of operations. Bechet was jailed in Paris when a female passerby was wounded during a shootout; after serving jail time, Bechet was deported. The most common version of the story, as related in Ken Burns jazz documentary,...

    someone started the fall cleanup

I knew that FALL was on it’s way, when I heard the crickets chirping, while on a boat cruise, down the Hudson on August 19. I was purposely listening for their song, and on the 19th I heard it. I mentioned the cricket doise to a friend, and ONLY when I mentioned it, did she then hear it. It must have been a background noise to her, that was just there. There is also something COZY about the later sunrises, and the early sunsets. I think we must have a bit of BEAR in us. HIBERNATION is the WORD, when it comes to how comfortable bed is in the morning, and with the later sunrise, you REALLY don’t want to get up YET! Soon, my neighbor, on the FIRST chilly night, will start a fire, and the air will then smell of FALL. Labor Day weekend, I will go to Cooperstown, NY. There is a sugar maple, on the main street, that is ALWAYS in full color at that time, It must be the Head of the Pack!

since it’s not cold enough down here in lagrangeville to turn the oil burner on at night, the missus & i sometimes resort to “feline-o-therm” method. we just invite our cats jo-jo & lucy to sleep curled up at out feet. their contented purring is the best ‘white noise’ i can think of. i’ll bet your jack is packing some high “KTU’S” (Kitty Thermal Units).
