What kind of garden tiller should I buy?

I'm getting ready to start a garden and I need to buy a tiller. I need one that is big enough to start the garden (the ground is not currently tilled). I want good quality but not over priced. Any suggestions?!

A rear tine tiller from Sears Craftsman, make sure you get a rear-tine, a front-tine will not break new ground easily.....

What is a good garden tiller to buy?

my grandpa is looking to buy a light weight gas powered
garden tiller for his small garden. he hired someone to break the grass sod last year so now he needs to get something
to maintain the garden

there are so many brands and types of tillers it can be really confusing to pick one. For small areas (10 feet by 10 feet) a really good small light weight tiller is called the MANTIS. Made by Little Wonder. Probably the best in its class. Cost is about 300.00 U.S. You see them advertised on T.V. from time to time.

For larger areas it really gets confusing and lots of choices.
Sears offers many intermediate size units that will do the job and last a reasonable amount of time with minimum problems at a good price. But if quality is job 1 and you want a machine to last for a long long time and are willling to pay the price check into B.C.S.

Troybilt used to be one of the best until they were bought out by one of the mega manufacturers but has really declined in the recent decade to nothing special except the price.

Bottom line is really an old adage that says "you get what you pay for" in the lawn a garden industry this is pretty close to true. Not always, but in general, the more pricey the equipment is the more or better material it has and the sturdier it will be.
All the companies want you to buy their product so try to make a product that will give you best performance for least dollars. Try to factor in the repair cost and ease of access to repair facilities. Check your local lawnmower shop and see what brands that they support. They can be very helpful with matching you up to the right machine and they will be able to get you parts and service quickly.

Your question really hit a nerve with me because I owned a lawnmower shop for 25 years and just shut it down a couple years ago. The fact that you have to go online to ask this question makes me think that your local shop is not very trustworthy or charges way too much so you don't go to them. It shouldn't be a stress point in your life to choose a piece of gardening equipment and your local business should help you and guide you without stressing you out.

Any tips for starting a garden mantis tiller for the first time this season?
AR365 Day195 Hands

I have a mantis garden tiller that i tried to start for the fist time this year. tank was empty and i placed fresh gas/oil mix. it took awhile after pulling the crank cord several times and the mantis turned over once, but have not been able to get it to stay on. any advise?

is there a primer bulb on it? If there is pump it 3 or 4 times before u start it. Also put the lever on choke, and pull the cord until it wants to start. Then put the lever on half choke and pull the cord, should start. after about 15 secs put the lever on no choke and u should be good. The only other component is really the spark plug. If it still doesn't start, take the spark plug out by pulling the wire off of it and using a ratchet and socket to take it out. It should be dry, and maybe a little black soot on it. Make sure the electrode is not touching the metal probe. Hope this helps, good luck.

how do you fix a garden tiller?
Dig-A-Tiller

my garden tiller will not start. it is getting fuel, spark, and air but it might be getting to much of one of them but don't know how to tell which one. Mainly setting the carborater

Sometimes this is a Dirty Carburetor. May have a little fuel hole/jet clogged from sitting. Try pouring a very small amount of gas into the Carb, have a Rag to throw over it if you get a fire. You just want enough fuel to get wet inside an Eye Dropper full enough. Then pull and see if it start and run a few seconds. IF, it does, it a clogged Carb and it will need cleaned. Sometimes you can do this yourself using a spray Carb Cleaner. Then when you get it going keep Fuel Stabilizer in the gas, as these not get used that often.

  • How To Find The Best Garden Tiller For You

Well that time of the year is here again to get in the garden and start planting. You find yourself strenuously busting up the garden soil so you can start planting. Why not save your body from the stress and make the whole process much quicker?

Garden roto tillers can make cultivating soil much easier. However, they come in so many different models and features that it can be quite a task to find the righ tone. How do you pick out the one that will work for you?

For small, tight gardens an electric garden tiller is a great option because they are lightweight and are easy to move around. Gas tillers may work well for your space as well. Most of these come in lightweight and they are made in a way that the user can easily handle them. The price is just right especially if you take into consideration how much stress it will save you. If you have very hard soil then a lightweight tiller may not be the best option for you. A good idea is to rent a big rototiller for the initial tilling and then you can use a smaller one thereafter.
