laying slate chippings in my front garden?
Overnewton, a Scottish Baronial Castle - Keilor, Melbourne

Hi, I am replacing the chipped bark in my front garden with slate chippings. has anybody got any tips for making it look reallyy good and for it to last well? i am putting that weed sheet down underneath but was wondering if theres anything else I should be doing??

any info would be really useful as I have never done anything like this before and my boyfrend is laying in bed and wont help me!! lol

Thanks in advance :-)

The small slate covers better,as large pieces don't link together well and show the underneath, unless you have deep coverage.Small is visually better for small areas also.
The weed sheet MUST be double thick,as the seed will search for the tiny perforations and grow thru,so double is essential.
If the ground is very uneven then level off roughly, otherwises you will need more slate to level it off.Tuck the black sheet overhang at the edges with point of scissors.Plum slate looks the same as blue slate when dry,but richer tone when wet

how do i landscape my front garden with loose slate,?
Overnewton, a Scottish Baronial Castle - Keilor, Melbourne

the garden has a small lawn, with bordering bushes, how do i stop weeds etc from growing thru the loose slate. do i put plastic sheeting and sand under the slate?

Dig off all the turf and other plants that you do not want.
Put down a layer of what we called Terram which is a black plastic woven sheeting sold in different widths.
Then place your choice of topping on top of this.
Slate is expensive so use some areas where you have just bark as this looks good but needs topping up every two or three years
Enjoy a trouble free maintanance free garden.

How much crushed slate to cover my garden?
Overnewton, a Scottish Baronial Castle - Keilor, Melbourne

Hi. I'm not exactly DIY minded, but I have one easy job to do. An area of crushed slate in my garden is looking a little forlorn, so I thought I'd put some more down. Can anyone tell me how much slate I would need to cover an area approximately 2m x 3m to a decent level (say an inch/inch and a half)? Thanks!

HI DAVE,As slate is flat its not the same way as calculating by volume size,so if you are buying from a local diy centre get one bag and lay over ground where you want it and see how far it goes, then get further back which you can now estimate, this is also determined back bag size,All the best John

how can I attach a piece of decorative slate to a rock for a garden memorial?
Overnewton, a Scottish Baronial Castle - Keilor, Melbourne

The piece of slate is painted on one side with decorative art work. We wish to attach it to a piece of terrapin green rock for a garden memorial at our local library. We wanted something heavy, so it will not be stolen. The rock with the slate attached will be placed into the ground a few inches.

use a mason drill bite[ 1/8 or 3/16 inch] , drill hole in slate then line hole up to rock & drill another hole, put in plastic sheild & screw to fit size of sheild & hole. home center will help u out.

Back Valley seasons: A slate roof and garden plants

Which is well known for its very old slate quarry, and had a light lunch,( but twice as expensive as take away!) and looking over the road from where we had lunch was this small piece of slate roof on an old but sort of made over cottage. The other half of the roof was corrugated iron but I loved the pattern that had been made of the slates on this roof.
