The stuff from the pet store comes in such a small bag for 10.00 and I have to buy 3 0r 4 bags each time.
If you are talking about the ground up bark(like those huge bags at walmart and home depot)- most of that stuff contains, (or may contain) cedar. Cant be used with reptiles- toxic to them. If you are not 100% sure of what type of trees make up the bark, dont use it. Many of those large bags do not specifiy what kind of tree is in them. You also do take chances with chemicals and little bugs/parasites. If they really are made from cypress(and you are sure), then Soixsies plan would work I guess, so long as it seems clean.
The only bark I buy is called Orchid Bark- I get it at Orchard Supply Hardware Store. It is Fir tree Bark, which is reptile safe. I use it for many snakes and some lizards. About 9 Dollars for the larger bags (1 cubic foot). Inspect the bag for mold before buying.Dont buy if moldy. If its wet, but not moldy, open it and dry in it a large container so it wont mold. They have smaller bags too- not a good $ deal though.
Depends on what type of tortoises you have, as to what bedding is best though.

I have an interview on friday for a position in a garden shop. I don't know what I should wear!
It doesn't matter if your being interviewed to scrub toilets, you always wear a buttoned up shirt, tie, pants and shoes.
Friends of mine have brought a house near Athens, and I would like to get them a voucher to buy garden tools. Can anybody advise me.
The only thing I can think of is to ring Tourist Information on +210 0606 8800 and ask them.....or ask them to look up a number for Garden Centres, Plant Sales or Nurseries in the area and go from there. Hope this helps :-)
Ughh. It's true. I'm a garden addict. I lowered my standards by swiping some seeds on a few well established plants in my local upscale garden shop (the demo garden surrounding the koi pond). Now I feel guilty, since the seeds are sprouting next to my sunniest window.
I am not positive about the plant that is giving me this high (but I suspect it is Baptisia). It has a huge seed cone (about size of a small rose bloom) with large round 1/16'' seeds inside.
In my earlier visits to this particular shop, I remember seeing this plant being approximately 3' tall. The stems are long and upright, like a false lupine (but the seed cone is TOTALLY different). I think the foliage was round-oval (my memory is not perfect).
Any ideas what my vice is?
mea culpa mea culpa. (I actually really do feel guilty for this "overalls" collared crime). To right this wrong I will spread my seeds from my mature plant to others.
I'm accepting Betty Ford Clinic suggestions specific to my illness?
God will certainly let you go to Heaven where you can tend the flower garden eternally.By snitching a few seeds, which might have been swept into the garbage anyway, you made sure that this plant can in the future enhance many more earthly gardens.Only true gardeners feel that way, nothing wrong with your 'vice'. In my book it says that the seed pods of the 'Baptisia' are inflated and look interesting in arragements.

Compost Tea at Garden in the Woods
Organically speaking, the proof is in the pudding, or in this case, the Garden in the Woods , owned and operated by the New England Wild Flower Society (founded in 1900). Here, the Society’s Garden Shop brews its own compost tea and uses it throughout the 45-acre public botanic garden in Framingham, MA.
Scott LaFleur, Botanic Garden Director, says, “We’ve switched to using compost tea as our sole method of feeding plants and the soil at Garden in the Woods. We use it throughout the botanical garden and have seen a huge difference in the growth and strength of our plants.”
The Society’s System25 has been busy this season. Scott continues, “We have to credit our use of compost tea in the beauty of the Garden this year. The weather has been crazy. If we had not built up the nutrients in our soil, our large collection of native plants, including rare and endangered species, could have been in trouble.”
Recently Scott demonstrated how to make compost tea at Garden in the Woods with Dave Epstein of GrowingWisdom.com, using a System10. Take a look at the video clip to find out why Scott says compost tea is “fantastic for the plants.”
Garden District Closing 14th & Church Store; Consolidating ...
Shame, it was nice having a nice big store like that to walk around in and look at plants. Too many people seem willing to drive to the boonies and buy cheap plants from Home Despot than supporting a local business. Neverthless, I think they could have done far better with more of a selection, and rebranding it as a ‘home and garden’ store.
