i live in a council house do i need to ask before i errect a 6ft by 6ft garden shed

How to build all natural wood outdoor garden shed from SolidBuild shed kit.

It measures approximately 6' x 4' and is very heavy. I have a walled garden with the only access through the house so I can't bring any motorised equipment into the garden. My lawn is well established and 100' long and I want to move the shed to the far end of the garden with minimal damage to the lawn.

We moved ours quite simply and did not have to buy fence posts or anything. First we emptied it out, then I had 3 friends come around and we lifted the shed one end at a time and slid ropes underneath. Then the four of us just grabbed hold of an end of rope each, lifted together and walked across the garden. This was a 8ft x 6ft shed and it took longer to empty it out than to move it. Make sure you have the final laydown area ready beforehand as you do not want to have to do it twice.

How big is a garden shed allowed to be? Does it depend on what its used for? Should planning application be sought?

It depends on the overall area of your property, you are allowed a certain percentage of your garden for a shed without planning as long as it is behind the building line and not interfering with your neighbours natural light/rights of way etc. Go to your local planning department for a booklet which will have all the relevant information for your area, it differs from place to place because of covenants on the land/parish councils/bylaws etc.

i need to build a garden shed / workshop because i can't really afford to buy a ready made one .what is the cheapest yet still strong and lasting way to do this . it needs to be at least 10ft x 10ft with double doors,it will be stood on a concrete base so would be no need for a floor.

Why don't you try and buy a used one instead of all the chew of building it?

Also have a word with your local DIY store because they will damaged stock which they sell off cheap, many sheds are delivered with panel damage and are easy to repair.
I used to manage a big store and sheds are a bit of a pain, some are delivered with the wrong panels so again this might be an opportunity for you.
You can join panels from two small sheds together to get it to your size.

Another option could be to use fence panels but they will need some extra support.

The garden shed we are after does not come in Colourbond anymore - is it possible to paint the Zincalume? Or does anyone know of a company that makes sheds to order? Everything online seems to lead to the same handful of manufacturers... Thanks!

It is possible to paint it... here are the details.

Exterior Roofs: Zincalume, galvanised steel usually 'corrugated iron'

Surface preparation:

1. Zinc and galvanised steel - Zinc is a reactive material which will corrode to basic zinc carbonate normally, and mixed with basic zinc chloride in coastal areas. The form of the corrosion product is not protective.

Coating of the metal is recommended as soon as possible, definately within four weeks. Washing with detergents and/or emulsifiable solvents is all the surface preparation that is necessary.

Even though the surface is cleaned initially, it cannot be overstressed that roofs in particular need washing down prior to each day's painting, if there is any danger of wind blown salt depositing on the surface. Where corrosion has taken place this must be carefully removed, leaving behind as much of the remaining protective zinc layer as possible. Wet abrasive removal is recommended.

2. Zincalume - is a blend of aluminium and zinc, and behaves predictably somewhere between the two. Although it is much more corrosion resistant than zinc, it is still recommended that it is painted as soon as possible after careful cleaning with Resene Roof Wash and Paint Cleaner.

To wash down, mix one part of Resene Roof Wash and Paint Cleaner with three parts of fresh water. Apply a liberal wash of this mixture to the surface with a nylon bristle brush or broom. Thoroughly scrub the surface to ensure complete removal of all grease, dirt, dust, flaking paint and other contaminants. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water and allow to dry.

First coat:
Wind blown salts on the metal surface, and between coats cause premature corrosion. Always wash the area to be painted with fresh clean water before commencing work. For new work apply one coat of Resene Galvo-Prime.

For repainting work spot prime bare areas with one coat of Resene Galvo One.

For locations in close proximity to the sea, two full coats of Resene Galvo-Prime or Galvo One are recommended.

Topcoats:
Apply two coats of Resene Hi-Glo Acrylic. The choice of Resene Hi-Glo Acrylic Micaceous Iron Oxide based colours will also give superior protection.

Follow label instructions at all times.
