It looks like you are off to a good start.

I've done this myself but I didn't have the flowerbed cleared like you do. I dug a trench in the soil that was the width of the bricks and just set them in place. They have settled some but otherwise it is working well. Looks like your way would be simpler. All you have to do is set the bricks in plage and fill the bed with top soil. Quick tip: I would tamp the top soil that is right around the bricks tightly. Then, once your bricks are in place and so is the top soil, pour either sand or top soil over the bricks and sweep it into the crevices. It will help keep your bricks steady. Understand that putting top soil between the bricks sometimes invites weeds but they are easy to hand pick.

Metal or Brick Garden Border?
In perfect isolation here behind my wall

I'm building a garden in the front of my new home and trying to figure out what the best type of border to go with. I have a friend who's a landscaper who says to use the steel garden edging because it's maintenance free and will hold up. My fiance wants to use decorative bricks (from Lowes / Home Depot) but I'm told after a couple of years they will sink a bit and because un-level. Please help asap.

Personally, i prefer the authentic and nice look of the bricks. I have seen the steel and it just doesn't look as good to me. The upkeep isn't bad at all. We never have to move them or adjust them at all. We have had ours for nearly three years surrounding our flower bed around our house. Hope this helped.

If making a brick edging around a garden bed...what is the best way to make it hold solid?
new bean tower

was thinking of just placing the bricks vertically inside the clay dirt and filling the clay dirt around the bricks where they only stick out a bit, and then filling the gaps with sand..

however, the bricks are still movable when i kick them, maybe they will settle in after some good rainfalls.. i dont know.

but is there another way to do this that isnt too much trouble?

cement along the bottom and then spread some in between the bricks would be better or do you think the method i have now will work after it gets settled in?

why and how so ?

thanks for your answers!

You must use cement otherwise you will have problems for the rest of eternity.

Brick edging?
Macon Georgia Garden Tour 56

I have a lot of bricks and want to make them into an edge to my garden. I want them to be on an angle with one end down in the ground. Is there a trick to this? I have started three times, and every time the line of bricks starts slanting a little more or less or starts to go lower. Is there some formula I can use to get it right. Thanks!

Not really enough detail here, but I'll give it at shot. There are a lot of choices for edging now a days, so look around, surf the web, print any pictures that appeal to you, take them with you when you shop. What you choose will depend on what you want them to do and what you want it to look like. A generic brick edging will be easy to install, clear the area of obstructions and lay the edging. That's the basic way, if you want the edging to be flush with the ground dig out the area and lay the edging in the trench, back fill around the sides and you are done. Some things to consider, if its is going to get walked on you might want to consider putting a edging brace in and filing over it. (Look up paver edging systems, if you think you need to brace the brick edging to hold it in place, the one called "the beast" is easy to install and can do curves. )
