How much time committment does a backyard garden take?
It's a Trap

I'm considering starting a vegetable, herb, and small fruit garden in my backyard, but I'm not sure if I'll have the time to tend to it like I should. I have a professional job that some times requires me to attend evening and weekend events, as well as working out and having a social life. What much time per week might I have to put into the garden if it had about 15 plant varieties? What else should I consider when managing a backyard garden?

In your case I'd do some kind of raised bed with a simple quick irrigation system, and a top layer of mulch to eliminate weeding. Inquire are a landscape outlet about a quick connect system which is what I use. All I do is hook the hose up to , turn it on low, and walk away for a about half an hour to do something else, come back and turn it off and everything is watered and there is no water waste. The time would be spent in setting it up, which is something you'd do a an hour here, and hour there, in the early spring. When planting season arrives you put down a landscape fabric or black plastic and your weeding for the season is done. What I do is burn a small hole in the plastic which has been place over the drip irrigation quick connect system careful not to burn the irrigation line and that is where I plant my plants. I place the wholes according to the size and shape of the mature plant. I stake or cag my tomato's right away, allow ample room for my bush varitey squashes. I like to plant basil too and I'm careful not to put them too close together so the air can circulate preventing mildew or mold. Fruit trees are something that can be planted once and babies for a year but most of them require sprays for pests and that can be a real pain. I don't really like chemicals.

So, in other words, the set up can take time but once there it will last you years with minimal care.

Is it possible for you to have poison Ivy in your garden/backyard?
garden wall

Earlier today while my cousins were playing in the backyard where the garden was around, I saw a bunch of 3 leafed plants. I thought it couldn't have been what I thought it is but I checked just in case. I have a book about plants in my bookshelf so I took it out and then looked up Poison Ivy. It said that poison ivy does have 3 leaves. And it had a picture of it and it looks exactly like the one plant in my garden that I think its posion ivy. So, my question is: Is it possible for there to have poison ivy in your garden/backyard. If it is how to get rid of it? I just moved in the house about less than a week ago and just realized it now.

It's very possible. Put on some gloves and spray it with a healthy dose of Round Up, it kills about anything. Makesure you keep kids and any pets away from the area for about a week, so they don't get any rashes or side effects from the poison.

Where do I start to learn how to create a backyard vegetable garden?
Whatever do you mean?

I have a roughly 20'X3' area in the backyard that would be perfect for a vegetable garden. Having grown up in the city I have very little clue about gardening.
Where do I start to gain knowledge about gardening and specifically about vegetable gardens. The vegetables/herbs/fruits I would like to grow would be tomatoes, parsely, lemons, etc. Suggestions on what is possible are also very welcome.

I am looking for recommendations on books, websites, etc.

I am in central California, USA.

Thanks very much in anticipation of your replies.

Regards!

Backyard CSI - Garden Plants and Gardening Forum - The Grow Spot

I love the chance to be the amateur detective and do a bit of backyard CSI when a perfectly good plant suddenly gets crook. It happened recently with these cheery people, pink pelargoniums in a hanging basket. The problem is that this is how they looked last spring. They were a happy family back then. This spring they were on the slab. Something was doing them in, and it wasn't pretty. This is the classic curl grub mugging scenario. Hanging basket with an outside light nearby. You'd think a light would provide some safety, but not from curl grub muggings. In fact, the beetle mum is attracted to the light at night, finds a patch of soil conveniently nearby, and she lays a clutch of eggs. The eggs hatch in the soil and immediately start eating the roots of any plants they find. They're not fussy; they'll eat just about anything. They love lawn grasses, but pelargonium roots will do just fine if that's all that's on offer....
