I am moving to new house and there is a drainage problem. The back yard needs to have drains put underground taking the water from back and side yards to front in street. Also want to pur a 3' x 12' pade along the back side of the house for BBQ and stuff then put runners along the sides of the house up to driveway only 5' wide so we dont trip because of the "V" ditch they put. Also we were thinking about a setting wall. We have a small buget (we just had the house built) and need to get it all done before our daughters 1st bithday the end of april.
I don't have an idea of the cost of cement pads and walls, but I might be of some help on your drains. French drains are expensive to install, because they are so deep and wide, which incurs a large labor cost. Another drawback to the french drain is the life expectancy. They typically last only a few years. They are subject to 'blinding' or clogging up because of the method used to construct them. The Multi-Flow system can be installed by any landscaper/gardener, or even yourselves, for a fraction of a french drain cost. Plus, you will have them working for many, many years to come. Depends on where you live, your property size, and the availability of various help to properly determine costs. Here in So Cal, Multi-Flow costs as little $50-$150, plus some necessary backfill (but again, only a fraction of what you would have to purchase for a french drain) and then the labor if you don't install it yourself. Hope this helps.

well thing is we just started rebuilding after Katrina. since we are very short of money we wanna do it all by ourselves. how do we go about planting the grass, other plants and all...also the lawn is not even- it has some lush patches and some that are dead. thanks.
First, go to lowes and buy a $10 lightweight landscape rake [about 3 foot wide] and rake the high spots down, until the yard is flat. If you want it level, you will have to bring in some heavy equipment to move some soil around. Buy about 25% more grass seed or turf builder than the bags recommend, and scratch the ground with the rake after using a spreader. This helps the seed get covered slightly so the wind won't blow it all away. Water daily enough to keep the ground damp at all times, but not enough so there is standing water anywhere. After a couple of weeks, you will see what areas need a little more seed, [that's what the extra 25% is for]. Try to keep people and animals off it until it becomes established.
Grass seed is expensive, but turf builder is much more costly. You can mix your own for about half the cost. Rye seed and oat seeds are much cheaper, and grow really fast to establish a grip in the yard, but will not come back next year. You can seed your yard with oats mixed in with the grass seed, and you will have better results. Birds will be feasting on the buffet of seeds, but the sprinklers chase them off.
In the late fall, re-seed your yard with about 20% of what you used to establish it, fertilize it, and you will have a golf course come next spring.
Stay away from buying the little bags of seed, as you can pay 2-3 times as much per pound. I buy either 25 or 50 pound bags only.

Currently it's a dirt lot with a lot of weeds on it. Bout 40ft by 80 ft. I want to do something cool, but I don't have a huge budget. Looking at 1000$ tops.
I've seen some really interesting ground sculptures.
You basically make a sculpture out of the dirt then plant your grass seed. So instead of plain old yard you have cool sculptured knolls.
You could do a sleeping woman, a couch an animal. Whatever you like really as Simply or elaborate as you like.

This is what happen. I have a pool in my backyard. The pervious owners broke a oval circle in the concrete to install the pool on the dirty instead of just installing it on top of the concrete. So I have a gap between the pool and the rest of the concrete. So when it rains the water just backs up in that gap instead of heading to the drains on both sides of the pool. Anyone know if I can fill that gap with rocks and hope the water will go towards the drains? If not rocks anyone have any ideas what I can do?
River rocks are natural & decorative. I use them in my flower beds to make like a "creek bed" so the water running off the roof doesnt wash away my mulch.
You can purchase them from garden centers...not expensive at all.

Reasons Why You Should Landscape Your Back Yard | Chillicious.com
You have to do as much as possible in today’s economy to make your house attractive to buyers and get it sold. There are more sellers than buyers in the market now, and, since this trend is likely to continue for a while, buyers can get away with being demanding and finicky.
You should not forget the backyard when you decide to sell your home. Having a Spartan design is acceptable if you keep the existing landscaping groomed properly. Your property includes the backyard, so how you maintain it demonstrates how you take care of the house itself. An eye-catching house and yard that is well cared for presents a good package.
Some people go overboard in their yards and make them very personal. For instance, having a nice Japanese garden in your back yard is great, but it might in fact hurt your ability to sell the house. This is because you would have to find someone who also loves Japanese gardens and is willing to take one on. If you have a nice house and a yard that is elaborate to your exact personal tastes, it will mean the new homeowners much share your passion for that type of yard.

Did you know that Ottawa has a very vibrant and exciting pond scene? Water garden enthusiasts from all parts of the city get together regularly to share ideas, tips and tricks, socialize and have a great time!! While water gardeners have been getting together for many years, the Greater Ottawa Water Garden Society didn’t see light until 2005-2006, when the idea came up (in 2005) during a pond tour about getting a pond club/society together. In the winter of 2005/6 four individuals got together to formulate a plan to create and organization whose mission would be to promote and encourage water gardening. The Greater Ottawa Water Garden Society (GOWGS) became reality in 2006. Cathi Fournier has been the President since the GOWGS inception.
The GOWGS’ membership continues to grow; it currently has close to 60 members. If you are interested in joining the society the benefits of joining the society are numerous: it holds monthly meetings with speakers who address a variety of issues related to water gardens including how to open/close your pond, water garden landscaping, fish, frogs, lighting etc. Members share their expertise on pond experiences. Members receive discounts at several nurseries and other businesses when they show their membership card. During the summer months rather than meetings, members hold ”pond socials”. This summer eight members opened up their yards to other members to talk about ponds and of course, socialize with food and drink! It is a great way to get ideas for your garden/pond.
